Main objectives

1) Contribute to the “Roadmap for a Resource Efficient Europe” objectives, including “optimal use of resources like raw materials, energy, and land, and reduced impacts on climate change, air pollution, noise, health, accidents, biodiversity and ecosystem degradation” by:

a. Reaching optimal use of raw materials by using flax instead of sand
b. Setting up an ecological behaviour reducing energy consumption in the production processes of composite materials used in the transportation sectors
c. Contributing to reduce the air pollution by reducing energy consumptions of the transport vehicles themselves by decreasing their components’ weight
d. Addressing the health issue currently risen about fibreglass, pointed out as being potentially dangerous for health (EU regulation N° 1272/2008 of16 December 2008)


2)  Demonstrate the relevance of the new solution for the railway sector, and its transferability to other sectors, by:

a. Validating its mechanical performances, which must be equivalent to those of glass fibres
b. Demonstrating its entire safety of use
c. Defining what should be its properties according to its sectors of application


3)  Enlarge the market targeted by the flax fibres industry in Europe.

These objectives will be successfully achieved through an efficient cooperation between five specialised companies and one national testing laboratory.
